The Backyard Retreat: A Deck Built for Rest & Gathering
When Maryville, Missouri residents Wayne and Barb Snyder contacted Rural Renovation, they had a three-fold objective for their beautiful Arts & Crafts home. Their goals included replacing the existing, high-maintenance wood deck, creating a stylish space that would eliminate future upkeep, and building and accessible staircase for their older dog, Holly.
The home’s backyard had great potential, but the existing deck beneath a wisteria canopy required frequent attention due to the nature of both materials. More importantly, their sweet, large dog Holly was struggling with the current stairs. We needed an engineered solution that would encourage her safe navigation.
Our team delivered a custom, two-tier deck that not only blends seamlessly with the home and landscape but also features a safe, accessible design that Holly now uses fearlessly.
The Challenge
The original space came with several challenges:
An all-wood deck that required constant maintenance
A narrow steep set of stairs for access to the back yard
A very aggressive growing wisteria canopy that was degrading the all-wood deck underneath
Our goal was to create a durable, low-maintenance, and visually cohesive outdoor structure that could stand up to the Midwest seasons while giving the homeowners and Holly an accessible and comfortable place to gather.
The Solution
To achieve the look and performance the clients envisioned, we used:
UltraDeck Fusion composite decking in a warm cedar tone
Custom-tiered steps for easy flow between the upper and lower levels
White posts with black metal balusters for a timeless contrast
The design not only improves accessibility and visual appeal but also creates a peaceful, shaded retreat ideal for entertaining or quiet evenings outdoors.
The Result
The finished deck transformed the backyard into a true outdoor extension of the home.
Now, Wayne, Barb, and Holly enjoy a space that’s:
Safe and family-friendly
Beautiful year-round with low upkeep
Perfect for hosting, relaxing, and connecting with nature
